pronouns

notes

  • Do not use あなた to address superiors; use their names.
  • Parenthesized forms are used less than the next more polite form.
  • For あなた、-がた is more formal than -たち.
  • Various texts annote that かれ and かのじょ are not full pronouns.
  • ぼく is associated with young males. Many men use おれ in informal converse.
  • あたし is said to be somewhat girly.
  • かのじょ is a recent invention (< 100 years). Before, かれ was used for both.
  • あの人 is a generic, and more such as あのこ that child are seen.
  • Reportedly かれたち is never used, although かのじょたち is.
